How to Measure Loss of Privacy
نویسندگان
چکیده
To compare different schemes for preserving privacy, it is important to be able to gauge loss of privacy. Since loss of privacy means that we gain new information about a person, it seems natural to measure theloss of privacy by the amount of information that we gained. However, this seemingly natural definition is not perfect: when we originally knowthat a person’s salary is between $10,000 and $20,000 and later learn that the salary is between $10,000 and $15,000, we gained exactly as muchinformation (one bit) as when we learn that the salary is an even number – however, intuitively, in the first case, we have a substantial privacy loss while in the second case, the privacy loss is minimal. In this paper,we propose a new definition of privacy loss that is in better agreement with our intuition. This new definition is based on estimating worst-casefinancial losses caused by the loss of privacy.

Approximate Measurement of Voter Privacy Loss in an Election with Precinct Reports
The California election process publishes tallies for each precinct as part of each county’s Statement of Vote. We take a data set from two California counties in the November 2004 election and use it to measure an approximate voter privacy loss : how much information is leaked about a voter’s vote by publishing precinct tallies. Our starting point is the privacy measurement framework of Coney ...

متن کاملMeasuring privacy loss in statistical databases
Protection of privacy in databases has become of increasing importance. While a number of techniques have been proposed to query databases while preserving privacy of individual records in the database, very little is done to define a measure on how much privacy is lost after statistical releases. We suggest a definition based on information theory. Intuitively, the privacy loss is proportional...
متن کاملEntropy as a Measure of Average Loss of Privacy
Privacy means that not everything about a person is known, that we need to ask additional questions to get the full information about the person. It therefore seems to reasonable to gauge the degree of privacy in each situation by the average number of binary (“yes”-“no”) questions that we need to ask to determine the full information – which is exactly Shannon’s entropy. The problem with this ...
